With the afternoon high tides this week it is best to get out early and take advantage of the quality incoming tides. This is a good time to fish the mangroves for redfish and snook using live bait or artificial's. If artificial's are your thing and you like to use soft plastic's try throwing zoom jerk shads or gulp jerk baits in white or watermelon red color. Texas rig them to insure a weedless set-up and skip them as far back as you can. In addition to soft plastic's, gold spoons work well and are effective around the mangroves for redfish. Work parallel to the mangrove shorelines and hit all the deep pockets. Allow the spoon to sink to the bottom then start a slow varied retrieve. With the high water and afternoon heat, they will stay way back in the bushes so cut bait might be a better option. Cut ladyfish or pinfish with their tails cut will work fine. ¼ oz jigs tipped with shrimp will also work, but again throwing them into the pockets of the mangroves is key to targeting the reds. Anglers might want to chum the area to increase their chances, so cut up the dead shrimp and whitebait and spread it around the mangroves. The strong incoming mourning tides have been great for snook fishing. Live white bait has been working on the snook around the floating docks near the passes and creeks mouths. Free lined on 3/0 circle hooks is the best method for them. These strong tides are key to quality snook fishing so once the flow slows might as well move to something else or try working the oyster bars. They have been known to hang out near the oyster bars on higher tides and live bait has been the ticket here.
