Estero thru Captiva

Estero Bay

Snook continue to be found both along our beaches and in their backcountry haunts. Anglers this week were occasionally greeted by large packs of snook usually of similar size. Live baits such as thread fin herring or pilchards worked great on 3/0 circle hooks and fish up to 40" continue to be caught. Other backcountry options this week included a snapper bite that continues to stay strong. When targeting snappers small pilchards or cut baits have worked best. Most of the backcountry snappers are under the 14" mark but occasionally you'll run across a bigger one. When fishing for snapper use as light of a leader as possible ie 20lb max and small hooks usually no bigger than 1/0 to entice the bite. Trout are still available and most of the larger fish we found this week came from fishing the beach shorelines while snook fishing. Tarpon are slowing down and can still be found but it's mostly our local fish again, and if you want to go after them I'd recommend starting early since its been a tough bite by mid morning.
