Coosa River Impoundment Lay Lake Impounded 1914 Lake level Full Pool Water Temp and Air Temperature Mid 80's Report By Reed Montgomery / Reeds Guide Service www.fishingalabama.com {%image_id=40306%} A recent late Summer bass fishing trip to Alabama's lower Coosa River Impoundement Lay Lake, with Reed Montgomery of Reeds Guide Service proved to be a very eventful and memorable fishing trip for a New York resident that was visiting his father in Alabama! (See www.cyberangler.com freshwater fishing photos) Most bass were caught in some very shallow water around aquatic weeds while fishng with topwater lures like Heddon's magnum baby torpedoe and zara spooks. Zoom's bubblegum colored "Trick Worms" fished weightless with a 3/0 hook were good as well! {%image_id=40307%} Although September can still display some mighty hot days (while often in the 90's), as October nears Lay lakes weedy waters will slowly begin to cool, inducing feeding largemouth bass and the Coosa River breed of spotted bass, usally taking place around the first week of October! Look for schools of shad (or any signs of baitfish and feeding bass), as summer draws to an end. Most schools of bass have followed these baitfish schools all summer long and they will continue to feed as waters cool. Lures fished from top to bottom will now begin to fool some big bass! Topwaters like zara spooks, buzz baits and fake frogs are great in water of 1-3 feet deep, especially early or late in the day. Rattling lipless lures like Rattletraps and Red Eye Shad in shad colors fished fast, but with a stop and go fashion, fool even skittish bass! So do shallow running square billed crankbaits and both floating and suspending hard bodied jerk baits!
