February trout

Beaufort

In my 19 years of guiding in the low country, this may well be the first charter trip I have actually targeted Trout in the month of February. Normally by now our water temps have dipped down into the 40's, and the trout have gone to the deep holes in the sound and won't bite. But this year isn't normal. Our water temp on Feb 2 was 52 degrees plus. I put my clients in a deep creek with soft plastics, and we picked up 10 trout. Most were under the 14 inch minimum, but we did have one real nice 17 inch fish that came on a Trout Trick. After the water slowed to a crawl we switched to Redfish on the flats which are our ususal target this time of year. Picked up a couple of nice ones. With lower temps on the way this coming week the trout bite may be over for a bit. But we always can fish a Redfish.
