Fish are bitting; Let's Go Fishin' soon!

Boca Grande

Fishing report for 4-21-08 by Captain Van Hubbard It was a busy week and we are catching fish. The weather controls exactly what we target. We did well out side with some kingfish and cobia. Waters are clearing and look good as winds back off for us to comfortably get outside. We saw a few permit last week but no takers yet. They will co-operate when the winds let us lock in on em. It is so exciting when the cobia pop up to the surface and let us sight cast to the schools of big fish. Many are slightly undersized but fun to catch; minimum size is 33 inches to the fork. We only had one shot on Saturday but landed a triple header with one a yard long for dinner. Cudas are there if we want to play with them. Baitfish are hiding and not coming to the surface because of cooler water, preventing us from locating the schools of minnows. We did get several small kings bait fishing our Sabiki's, so the future looks bright for kingfish. Inside the fish are still messed up by the cool weather and winds last week. Snook and reds are around but not anything like we are used to for April fishing. Boats are one challenge but water temps are the big problem in my opinion. I do expect to enjoy some better action any day. This is supposed to be the last cool front? When these fish come out and start to feed it will be something you want to get in on. We did find a few nice reds and several smaller ones. Spanish Mackerel are back if you want action and food for friends and family this is the best bet. We usually use minnows and light tackle to cast to feeding fish. Kings are expected to give us a few more flurries before they move north. The cooler fronts should slow their migration down and give us more action. Jacks are cruising by and exciting if you want a big pull near shore. I still look for more pompano but they have been hiding recently. Short and sweet this week; fish are biting and I am busy. There are still a few dates open and tarpon are due to turn on any time. We have seen a few but mostly south of Boca Grande. Let's Go Fishin' soon. Captain Van Hubbard.
