Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Homosassa

With Bay News 9 plugging CyberAngler today, I must give the Tampa Station 5 stars when it comes to the weather. Also, destinations within Citrus County are featured on Bay News 9 more than the other Tampa Bay Stations. Homosassa is only 60 miles north of Tampa. Tampa is the closest large city to Homosassa. In less than two years, a turnpike or parkway will be providing fast access to the Nature Coast. I am not sure that this is good for a lot of reasons. However, it will be good for the traveler who can get here in less than a hour and be in the last frontier. Fishing Homosassa is superb year round. The west central coast of Florida location provides miles of shallow clear water flats. Salt water fish such as spotted seatrout and redfish provide anglers great action on light tackle. These two species are the most sought after inshore fish. Grouper are fast becoming an inshore sought after fish. While the Gag grouper is the most sought after offshore fish, tighter regulations with length limits of 22 minimum and bag limits of 5 per person has improved the fishery dramatically. If you were to ask me what is biting now, I would have to say grouper. This is by far the hardest hitting fish we have. Using crank baits and casting over rock piles in water as shallow as 6 feet. That is right, 6 feet. You will not understand it until you try it! With approaching cold fronts, I try to get out there and try it if the wind is not too bad. This morning is a time when I do have a charter and have to make a decision to go out or stay in. Tides will be higher than normal with the south wind and redfish should be feeding close to mangrove shorelines. Most fish do bite ahead of a cold front, then slow down on feeding as the front passes overhead. The day after a front is the hardest day to catch fish. That is the days you want to surf the web for fishing information or book your charters. Well, I got to go and remember if you are too busy to go fishing, you are just too darn busy! Have a Good Day!
