Fishing Report for New York - Long Island North Shore

Long Island

You must fish NOW! Captain Robin Calitri bringing you news from Long Island. Last week was very special. There are tons of school size bass for the light tackle angler and bigger ones for the chunkers. You can fish them against the grass at high tide and in the rocks at low tide. Use poppers, chartreusse clousers and bunker flies. Large plastics work for the spin guys. Mitch Bernstein and I had a banner day with fish to 11 pounds. We were fishing sheltered areas in the Cold Spring Harbor and Huntington areas. Caren Calitri had two nice bass on a 7wt fly rod while joining me on father’s Day. Local fine artist Jim DelGrosso has been taking Bass, small blues and fluke with regularity in the Gardiners Island area. Depth charge line in the current. I had the pleasure of guiding Chris Hessert and t Edward Jung using John MacMurrrays boat on Jamaica Bay. Chris is an accomplished angler who took many, many bass on fly up to 14pounds and a pig of 19pounds on a spin popper. Edward who was a first time fisherman gets rookie of the year honors with over twenty bass to 13 pounds on spin tackle. He even nailed two nice bass on my 7wt fly rod. Jamaica Bay and Breezy Point are really happening. Birds, shrimp, squid, butterfish and hords of big bass are on the top.
