Bottom Fishing Heats Up off Fort Lauderdale In my last report I mentioned that mahi fishing was good, but this week everything changed. We did a few trips this week offshore, but the mahi where hard to find, and the ones we did locate, were undersized. In our last few trips, we have concentrated our attention on the reefs to the south or north of Port Everglades. We've found some good action and between 100' to 200'. This time of year, we catch a lot of bonito because there are plentiful, eager to bite and lots of fun to catch. We use live pilchards on light tackle and our customer love reeling in these hard fighters on light tackle. {%image_id=39499%} {%image_id=39500%} On days where the current is slow or nonexistent, we like to slow troll live pilchards and goggle eyes. This live bait spread has been producing some nice kingfish. {%image_id=39496%} {%image_id=39502%} We've also found some good action dropping live baits to the bottom, usually on or near some of the many wrecks and artificial reefs we have in the Fort Lauderdale area. The neat thing is you never know what you're going to pull up. Our last trip produced a variety of jack species.
