Epic Sailfish Bite

Last week the sailfish that had be stalled up off Stuart finally decided to come through and it was the bite that everyone dreams of. Huge packs of fish came through with double digit catches a common thing if you could fish during the week. Most boats were running out of bait in a few hours because of soo many sailfish eating. In two hours fishing 15 sailfish was not unheard of. The best I heard from Boynton Beach to Ft. Lauderdale was 29 fish on the full day. The reason for such low numbers for the whole day was most boats were running out of bait in the first few hours fishing and not that many people fishing during the week. This weekend things slowed back to normal with most fort lauderdale fishing charters catching from 1-6 fish on their trips. Mixed in with the sailfish were kingfish. Kings were eating the kite baits intended for the sailfish this weekend quiet frequently but slicing through the mono was the only result. When we had out wire we were catching between 6-10 kings for each half day. Also this weekend we caught a few small blackfins off the kite on herring. We always like to fish at least smaller baits off the kite incase thats what the fish are keyed in on. Just so happens thats what the blackfins wanted. This time of year we consistently find blackfin tunas off ft. lauderdale though they are generally on the smaller side. Though they can still be fun targeted with 4-12lb test. A few dolphin have been around, though have been less than in the past week. This week of west wind will only make it worse but that doesn't mean you can't find a few on the reef. On the Bahamas side the wahoos really bit well on the last full moon. We have a few more opportunities to get over there in the next couple of months before they dissapear till august.
