August Swordfishing Aug 16 2007 Each year August kicks off with the biggest Swordfish coming through. In the past 3 years that I know of, 500 and over 600 pound fish have been caught during the months of August through October. Last week we were out and had on a great fish that we pulled the hook on. He took a live bait on the far float. I saw the rod bend over and a little drag slipped out then stopped. We got on the reel and cranked as fast as possible as we saw the electralume already on the surface glowing like the moon. We got tight and the fish started his run into the deep. Within a few minutes we were straight up and down and this fish wouldn't stop. I pushed the drag to strike and the fish picked up more speed heading towards the bottom. We were able to hold on for about 30 minutes and then the hook pulled and shattered our dreams. Sometimes that happens with live bait but not often. The live bait gets wacked and runs for his life entangling the Swordfish as he tries to get away. Many times we brought in Swordfish wrapped in the leader 5 or 6 times. As this moon gets bigger we should see some great catches. On the reef were catching Kingfish and Bonito and some Barracuda. Surprisingly we caught 2 Sailfish last week. One was in 600 feet of water as we trolled live Ballyhoo and the other was in 120 feet that ate a Pilchard as we were letting him swim out. Take advantage of the calm mornings and come on out to the fishing grounds. Bring your suntan lotion! See you on the rip, Captain Cary Hanna
