Fort Lauderdale, FL - Offshore

A little of everything! We have been fishing everyday and quite a few nights for the past two weeks. It’s been hard to get time to do this report! Every day has been good to great fishing. We had a great day last Saturday. (3/1/03) We had a group charter the boat for an all day trip. I heard the Sailfish were biting really well off of Miami. We trolled for Wahoo at 12 knots all the way to the Sea Buoy off Government cut. When we got to the buoy, the current was going good to the North. We put the kites up with live Goggle eyes out for bait. With-in the first 10 minutes we caught one Sail. A lot of weeds were in and we needed to move. We decided to troll the reef for groupers to the South. We caught 2 Black Groupers over 15 lbs each. We put the kites up again and went 1 for 2 on the Sailfish and caught a 12 lb Mutton Snapper on deep bait. We took a look offshore on the ride home and trolled around a weed line and caught 3 nice Dolphin (Mahi-mahi) and a Wahoo. What a day. Action packed and a little of everything caught! We caught a 60 lb Swordfish last night and heard of very few others. One night they bite and the next night you have to be one of the lucky ones. The Kingfish are still biting to the South off Haulover inlet. Strips and spoons on a planer or a wire line are best. We did catch a 50 lb Kingfish on live bait there too. We caught quite a few Sailfish this week from the Fort Lauderdale Sea Buoy South to Haulover in 120’ of water. It’s been best when the water is clean and the current is going to the North. Some real nice Sharks are being caught. The have been two Mako Sharks were caught over 600 lbs in the last 2 weeks and a few more under that weight. Thresher Sharks are still being caught in 300 ‘ of water. Seems like quite a few different species of fish and sharks are coming through right now, so you don’t know what you might catch! We even heard of a Blue Marlin being caught this week. Were rigged and ready to get out there! Catch-em-up, Captain Kunta
