With October here I can finally feel like summer is over. We are about to enter one of the best times of year for action in this area. It looks like the net ban is providing a strong mullet run this season. The canals are loaded. Both finger and mediums. Every morning the jacks, snook and tarpon go on a feeding binge just as the sunlight gets bright enough to turn off your running lights. Even a beginner to throwing a castnet can look like an old pro. The schools are so thick that even a bad throw gets a load. The jacks were tearing holes in my net the other day as I pulled in a full load, as we watched a huge Snook blast out from under a dock a few times to grab a mouthfull. With all this going on it makes it pretty easy to bend a rod on the inside. Just get a well full of mullet and drag them around the harbor and canals. The first light of the morning is a definite peak feeding period although you'll get bites throughout the day as long as the tide is flowing. This will continue to be the pattern until the strong northeaster's blow through. Then the port should hold the pilchard's and some hungry bluefish, spanish mackerel and cuda's. It's a good time to hold a baited rod! Sea Ya! Captain Ron Mallet
