Fort Lauderdale, Florida - Saltwater Fishing Report

Now that June has arrived I guess it's OK to say summer is here. A lot of areas in the country will see the same temp's during the mid day hours that we get, but few start the with 82 degrees at sunrise. These conditions bring two things to mind. Night fishing and shorter day trips. The evening can be very prodictive for many types of fishing during the long days of summer. On the inside the snook will be cooperating around the bridges and in the western rivers/canals feeding the I.C.W. My best luck seems to be the days around the full and new moons. Try getting a hold of some chunky live shrimp and drift them with the tidal flow around the high tide change. Find an area that has the combination of good water flow and a shadow line from some sort of permanent light. Another good summer routine is to anchor on the bottom after dark near your favorite wreck or drop off outside the inlet and put out a block of chum. The snappers bite pretty good during June. Mangrove, mutton and yellow tail should show if the current is flowing right. Don't forget to float back a larger livebait too, kingfish and blackfin tuna love to eat at night and will find a good chumslick and make it home for a while. When I fish during the day this time of year it's usually for dolphin further off or the kingfish, blackfin tuna's and sailfish still lingering on the reef. It's been good lately when bumping live baits around in close or dragging rigged squid further out. Give a shot. Sea Ya! Captain Ron Mallet
