March 5, 2010 INSHORE - I have live in Ft. Pierce all of my life and I have never seen ice on my truck in March! I can't ever remember having this much cold weather for this long of a time. And, as you guessed it the cold has effected the fishing again. The water temps are cold and most of the fish are not feeding. There have been several schools of redfish up around Queen's Cove and Jack Island and they are not feeding. Just about the same with the trout -- a few fish were reported last weekend and they were taking a live shrimp fished under a popping cork in 5 to 6 feet of water. This week the bite has slowed way down and the fish have lock jaw. Same thing for the snapper -- only a few fish were caught the first part of the week. The good thing is that the sheepshead, sandperch, bluefish and spanish mackerel are eating and eating good. For the sheepshead and sandperch try just about any structure and use a small live shrimp. The sheepshead have been from 2 to 6 pounds. The bluefish and spanish mackerel are in the Ft. Pierce Inlet and in the Turning Basin and they will take just about anything you throw at them. There was a good flounder bite the last part of last week at the Jetty. A live shrimp was the way to go. TEEN ANGLERS - This months inshore tournament for the Treasure Coast Chapter of Teen Anglers will be next Sunday -- March 14th. Teen Anglers if for the 12 to 18 age group and there is also a Junior Teen Anglers for the 5 to 11 age group. If you would like more info on either group just go to the web at www.teenanglers.org or call 772-201-5773. BRAGGING BOARD - Tessa Grotzinger with the help of her dad caught 3 nice flounder while fishing at the Jetty. They were using live shrimp. John and Theresa Gilson caught 3 sheepshead and 22 sandperch while fishing from a dock in the Ft. Pierce Inlet. They were using live shrimp. If you would like to report a catch you can e-mail me at [email protected] or call me at 772-201-5770. You can also reach me on the web at www.captjoeward.com Capt. Joe Ward Capt. Joe's River Charters
