Ft. Pierce Inshore - Offshore Report

APRIL 1, 2010 INSHORE - The inshore fishing this past week has improved greatly with the winds slowing down, the sun shinning and the water temps are warming up. There has been a good trout bite since last weekend. Most of the fish have come from the Harbor Branch and Round Island area. On Sunday there were several nice catches even with all the wind. Most of the fish have been caught on a live shrimp and several have been 21 to 24 inches. I did talk to a couple of anglers who had just finished wading and they each had 3 nice trout -- they were at the Midway Road area. I got one report about the redfish around Jack Island and he said that they were there but not feeding. Around the bridges and docks there is still a strong sheepshead bite with a few black drum mixed in. The sheepshead have been as big as 5 pounds and most all of these fish were caught on live shrimp. A few snapper have been showing up in the same areas but most were just a little to small to keep. The bluefish and jacks are still in the Ft. Pierce Inlet and the Turning Basin and there are a few spanish mackerel mixed in. OFFSHORE - The conditions offshore have also improved. On Saturday we had one boat go diving and they came back with a good number of nice snapper and also 7 big lobster with the biggest one going 7 & 1/2 pounds. The kingfish are here and in about 40 to 60 feet of water and they have been taking live baits. Not much to report on the dolphin -- one angler said he saw a few in about 400 feet of water but no catches. The bottom fishing for snapper, seabass and trigger fish has been about the best thing going. Along the beaches there is plenty of spanish mackerel, bluefish and jacks to keep you busy. Also, plenty of whiting in the surf and also a few weakfish. These fish were being caught on fresh dead shrimp. JUNIOR TEEN ANGLERS - This Saturday is the from shore fishing tournament for the Junior Teen Anglers. They will meet at Harbour Pointe Park and fish from 9 to 11am.
