Tarpon Time

June Fishing Report. Inshore fishing action is good, start early with a good incoming or high outgoing tide for red fish action. With all the fresh water pumping out from all the rain we got the reds are more out in the cleaner water like the outside points and islands. Look for mullet schools to a key sign that reds fish are close by. On my recent charters we have been using pin fish and green backs for bait. Trim the tails and nose hook the green backs or trim the tail on a on a pinfish and tail hook the bait. Snook are also in the mix of red fish, use the same baits but with out cutting the tail off the green backs. Tarpon are here and making there migration north look for them off Bayport on the sand bottom in 3 to 6 feet of water, small live blue crabs or a soft plastic fluke will work. Grouper season has started and will run to the end of December. We are catching some nice gags in 10 to 12 feet on small rocks with deep under cuts aka ledges, you might have to sit and chum them out or hit more rocks to get some keeper gags but they are here. Live green backs or frozen cut bait will do the job.
