Hello again this is the father and son report of SkinsandFinsCharters.com. Down here in the Florida keys the fishing is starting to heat up at the beginning of April. The water and the air temperature are starting to heat up as well, causing more and more fish to show up in out waters. Spring time fishing is always a blast with the tarpon, the big silver king starting off the show! That's right tarpon season is here up on the flats the fish were seen moving in quite early this year and are just starting to moving into the channels as well. Up on the flats we have been seeing large schools of these giant fish either throwing live shrimp or crabs depending on your captains preference or for the more experienced angler, the flyrod is always a fun choice. Also on the flats the permit and bonefish are being seen as well. These smart but fun fighting fish have been know too take one hundred yards of line in a matter of seconds. The preferred bait is a live blue crab or live shrimp. Rigged with lighter tackle these fish prove to be a real test of the anglers skills. Also in the back waters of the glades the snook and redfish are thriving on the flats. Dirty water fish always eat better and lately has been shot after shot so for you fly fisherman what a great opportunity to land a fun fighting fish such as the snook, redfish and even large trout. In the backcountry the snapper and trout bight has really been in full swing. We are catching forty through sixty fish ranging from 1-5 lbs and the larger trout are being found in the run offs as well. On the right tide the snook, black drum, redfish and a variety of other species are being caught along the deeper channels next to the islands. We are using a jig tipped with shrimp, letting it sink down to the bottom and slowly reeling them back waiting for a powerful drum to attack it. Another way to fish these fish is to pitch live pilchards or pinfish toward the trees and just let them swim I'm the current until the large fish notices it. For the more powerful fighting fish there has been a great big of large sharks in the backcountry ass well. Bull sharks, lemons, sand shakes, and black tips. Rigged on a much heavier rod these fish put up a amazing fight. Well that's what's been going on down here in the keys want to give it a try? Give us a call or check out our web sight SkinsandFinsCharters. Com until then this is captain Donnie and Ted Benbow asking you to keep it in the shallow grass.
