Calling Sails and Lots of Them!

Hopefully this winter we will see the same Sailfish run we saw a couple years back, the same season that the Silver Sailfish Derby witnessed over 900 sails throughout the tournament. By the early signs it very well could be as sails have been roaming in large numbers in waters between 90 - 150 ft very. Have a couple anglers ready as I had to let a couple sails run free do to triple hook ups that just made things chaotic. Live bait is definitely a necessity if you are targeting sails, however a buddy of mine has been having some lucky on naked ballyhoo in the same depth range. The dolphin bite has been very strong but very inconsistent in size, some in the 25-30 pound range and then some peanuts. I have only been fishing live blue runners over the past week, however some have said dolphin have been hitting trolled ballyhoo just as strongly. Best bet: Have live bait either blue runners or goggle eye and either flat lines these baits by bump trolling or kite fish on a current rip. By bump trolling the baits you are able to work that 90-150 ft depth range better but by using a kite your chances are better for presenting the best looking bait to the sailfish. Dolphin are in this range as well but more have been in the 200-275 ft range. Check the forecast below as winds NW rotating clockwise to NE is a very productive weather pattern for sailfish.
