Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

High Pressure Slows Fishing A High-Pressure system moved into the area on Friday putting the brakes on the Fantastic fishing that we have been enjoying the past week. Thursday was the last day we caught any sailfish and we had to work extremely hard to find the 2 we caught. We started off Miami and ended up fishing till almost 5:30 to locate the fish. The fish were spread out and many were caught out deep in the 160-ft. range. Friday the fishing was terrible. We only saw one sailfish which we missed and caught a few Dolphin and some other reef fish. Saturday was slow but some patches of grass moved into the area in the afternoon and we did manage to find a lot of Dolphin. The fish were tough to get to bit a line and we managed to only get 24. The fish were nice size and I think as long as the weed and grass stays in the area we should have some Dolphin action this week. A front is moving into the area again Tuesday and this should be the spark plug we need to ignite the fish. Closer to shore there have been some Blue fish in the area of the range markers off Miami Beach. The fish have been in the 2 to 5 pound range and biting live pilchards, and live shrimp best. Mackerel have also been in the same area and bite most of the day using the same techniques. Tarpon fishing around the Harbor Pilots dock has been good around sunset and in the early morning. Live shrimp and plugs are producing most of the fish. The tarpon are in the 40-pound range. The bait situation has been tough. Most of the bait is in Hawks’s channel and spread out. We have been trolling in the area outside of Bug Light and marking the threadfins on the depth recorder and catching them that way. They have been nice size baits. Out Look: With the next front don’t be surprised to see the Black Fin Tuna showing up, they appear this time of the year and can be caught on the edge while kite fishing.
