Rough But EXCITING Cutting Edge Fishing Reports Capt. Quinton Dieterle 4/23/01 Co Co Plum Tournament a Huge Success With winds whipping close to 25 knots and nearly 8 ft. seas you would have thought the fishing would have been slow, it was just the opposite. Nearly 400 sailfish were released in the 3 day event. The overall Winner “Rod Holder” with Captain Andrew Pis caught a total of 18 sailfish to win this year’s event. The lead changed close to 10 times in the final 5 hours of the Tournament, and the action was non-stop. Fishing on the Dr. J we had a chance to win on the final day catching 5 more to add to our two day total of 9, but we could only miss the final 3 or 4 chances we had. We still had a great time and I have to say the tournament committee did an outstanding job organizing the tournament. In other news, the fishing has been fantastic. Plenty of Dolphin on the edge and lots of kings in shallow. If your fishing in the area of 120 ft. the chances for a sailfish are good, with lots of Dolphin bites mixed in. The kings have been good in the area of 80 to 90 ft. and the best area has been off the tip of Key Biscayne. Bottom fishing has started to improve with some nice mutton snapper action off the reef from 60 to 120 ft. The area around Triumph has been the best. Some nice grouper have also been caught in the same area. Live pilchards are the best bait this time of the year. Bait fishing is still extremely tough; the best bet is in government cut for live pilchards. Try your bay spots if you have some. Marker 21 or any of the inside markers or buoys could hold bait.
