Key Largo Backcountry Fishing

Wow! Its been a busy week, Christmas is behind us New Years in front of us and the start of our busy season in the Keys. I took a day to myself and went out for a couple hours to get a good feel for the fish bite. The water level had come back to a reasonable height and made getting into the good areas much easier. At my first spot I eased up to the point and used the trolling motor to sneak up on the deeper hole. A group of about 8 snook were sitting in a mere 4 inches of water. These smaller fish were facing into the current waiting for lunch to swim by for a quick snack. I miffed the cast spooked the school and while displaying the disappointment in myself, I neglected to see the big Redfish just around the corner and spooked him too! LOL I guess thats fishing sometimes. I moved on to the next area and from a distance I could see Redfish tailing in the shallow grass flats. Again I used the trolling motor to get into position, I was suprised at the amount of snook all over the flat. I made a cast but a 4' Blacktip Shark grabbed the bait before the Snook got to it. Once in position on the flat, I had Redfish tails waving at me from all directions. I had a new reel and wanted to test the drag so I grabbed it and with a quick cast I had a 28" Redfish pulling drag. Many people don't realize that once you hook a Redfish and it begins to splash around your boat, the other fish will come right up to investigate. I made a quick release and another cast and had another redfish on.{%image_id=41469%} I raised the Power Pole and drifted across the flat to another point. I could see the activity and knew there were fish hanging around. I poled down up current from the point and made a few cast and hooked a nice Snook. A few more cast resulted in 2 more Redfish and I jumped a tarpon. The sun was getting low so I decided to start heading towards the dock. As I passed through one of my favorite creeks I noticed a huge school of Snook, 20-30 fish. Not being able to pass the opportunity up, I poled down up current and and made some long cast to the fish. I landed 2 fish withing about 5 minutes and was broke off 2 or 3 more times.{%image_id=41468%} Needless to say, the fish are hungry and feeding aggressively. Come on down and enjoy our beautiful weather and catch some fish. Give me a call @ 407-808-0405 or visit www.ankledeepadventures.com We look forward to hearing from you.
