Dog days of August

August is always a great month for anglers who want to get away to Key West and enjoy the quiet solitude of the island in the summer time. Guest house rooms and some hotels are cheap. The restaurants are not full of people and there is no waiting to get a cool drink at your favorite bar after a day on the water. The bonefish are in 'pack mode" on the warm shallow flats. It makes it easier to entice them with a delicious fresh crab because they are h-u-n-g-r-y! If we get a little wind the permit are not as easily spooked and we all love fish that are paying more attention to their presented meal than they are to you and the boat. The Gulf of Mexico side of Key West is great this month for large permit on a falling tide. The mangroves hold Reds, smaller Snook, Jacks and bigger than life Barracudas looking to eat everything else. I am doing a lot of live baiting with pinfish or crabs on my Tarpon trips at night They seem to be just a bit more inclined to demonstrate their aerobatic techniques this time of year with a fesh pinfish in their mouth but that could just be my opinion because I love to see those silver kings airborn. I have great deals on fishing trips in August so call me and we can swap fish tales. Tight lines and great sunsets! Capt Paul Ollariu
