After nearly a month of vacation, I am glad to be back in Bonefish Heaven again! Undoubtedly, the most relaxing flats fishing is stalking Bonefish by wading in shallow water. In so doing, you become part of the marine environment. Sting rays, Shark, Barracuda all become curious by your movements. The underwater noise made by shuffling footfalls is also a warning signal to wary Bones and Permit feeding with tails out of the water. So, take it easy, be aware of your presence, and try not to disturb the surroundings and creatures within.Once you spot the Bonefish tailing, your approach must be slow and methodical. It also helps to keep a low profile if the Bonefish come close to you. Often, I prefer a kneeling cast of 20 feet to a standing cast of 50 feet. Accuracy is paramount in presenting the fly to a tailing/feeding Bone. The fly should land with a gentle "plop" about a foot in front ot the fish's head. If all goes well, the Bone will look up, and see the fly as you make your first short twitch. By now, if the fish is close enough to you, you may actually see the take, come tight, let the Bone run, clearing your line to the reel! After two or three long runs well into the backing, the Bonefish will circle around you a few times until spent. Your reward is Bonefish Heaven!
