Key West and Lower Keys

Winter Bonefishing Outstanding Dec. 18, 2003Mike Mulvaney of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania weathered the recent storms and cold weather on the Key West flats this week and caught five Bonefish from 5 to 8 pounds, Pompano from 6 to 7 pounds, Jack Crevalle from 5 to 7 pounds, and Spotted Seatrout from 2 to 3 pounds. "Capt. Dexter you are wearing me out with fish!" Mulvaney said as the last day was over. Indeed, it was Mulvaney who was wearing out the Bonefish, as he fought 6 and landed 4 in a two hour span one day this week. Believe it or not, the water temp was a chilly 69.2 degrees. It had risen from 67.5 degrees earlier in the day. "We must have encountered a hungry school of fish that's all I can say" Capt. Dexter reported to the locals at the Marina while loading the skiff on the trailer. Mulvaney caught and released all of the Bonefish on a Deep Water "Gotcha" fly.Mulvaney also caught Pompano from 6-8 pounds as pictured above, Jack Crevalle from 5 to 7 pounds and Seatrout from 2-3 pounds. Mike had a few shots at baby Tarpon and had one take his fly on the last day, however the baby Tarpon wriggled off the hook to the chagrin of angler and guide. Mike summed the encounter with the lost Tarpon up well: "I guess you really have to set the hook with Tarpon of all sizes".Mike had alot of fun with the Jack Crevalle, catching more than we could keep track of, all about the same size as this one.
