The Fishing Report. August 1, 2009. Despite the chaos of the 2 day mini-season for lobster this past week, we caught Bonefish and Permit on consecutive days. We had to work very hard to accomplish this feat, but it was well worth the effort. For those who are unfamiliar with the lobster orgy on the Keys waters, thousands of boats armed with snorkelers, nets and tickle sticks invade the flats, channels and basins bug-hunting for spiny lobsters. The noise created by the motors running through our Backcountry and Ocean side flats spooks the fish and makes it difficult to catch them. {%image_id=11177%} {%image_id=11175%} However, with the right strategy and hard work poling the boat into shallow zones miles from the other boats, we manage to find and catch some nice fish. The weather has been typical for the summer with mostly East to Southeast winds. That translates into very good fishing for the Big Three (Tarpon, Bonefish and Permit) during early mornings through the early afternoon. {%image_id=11176%} All in all, the 2009 Tarpon season will go down as one that was great from April to Mid-May, followed by an outstanding worm hatch, then alot of West Winds and low pressure that made the fishing very challenging indeed. We are looking forward to Grand Slam season this summer!!! Our Father (Mother) - Son (Daughter) Key West Flats Fishing Trips are now scheduled for throughout the winter, spring, summer and fall.
