Winter Fishing Key West. No Snow Removal Required. You bring the ice! December/January Its been a warm December with light winds on most days and screamin' winds from the Norh on the few others. I am still finding tarpon. They must be locals who come out to play every morning because they know we won't eat them. There are also a lot of sharks looking for quick snacks (not you, just your bait). And, here's the odd part. In many of the gulf channels where I can get my flats skiff into we have hit Cero Mackerels. Not a missprint!! Ceros in the shallows. Plan on spending some long days on the water. 6 to 8 hours and we will catch the fish and your arms will be tired. The back country is very rewarding this time of year in many ways. Many different types of fish feed in the shallows. Winter tarpon, bonefish and permit are sometimes difficult to find due to falling water temperatures. However, in the mangroves are plentiful numbers of redfish and trout. In the seagrass jacks, barracuda and an occasional pompano are available. Now and then, even if the wind is blowing 25 knots in the back country we can work on the lee side of the wind with success. Winter trout will be showing up soon in greater numbers In the late fall on fly and spin tackle I like to use live fresh pinfish not two day old half dead bait. I use the cast net just like old school. It works great. We fish 6 hour back country or full day trips. I don't do many half days. We need the extra time and when you get there you will understand and not want to go back. The bird watching on the flats is breathtaking. You can enjoy great wade fishing on the sand flats for permit. There are several great beaches for a relaxing walk and eating your lunch. I can say that fishing here this time of year is very beautiful as well as spiritual. Not like tarpon season. I have fished the Keys since I was 15 years old. I love to catch fish and it shows.
