Surf Fishing East Central Florida

Spring can be a bit tricky for surf fishing, mainly due to winds. Expect windy conditions to subside later in the season as the weather warms. Spring time is also a time of transition. We see fish moving back to their northern home grounds from their winter migration - such as bluefish, as well as a mixture of cold water loving species, such as pompano and black drum. Flounder are coming back in from their annual spawning run offshore and can be found around structure throughout the surf zone. Look for rocky ledges, pilings - such as the Cocoa Beach Pier and jetties around Port Canaveral and Sebastian, to find the flatties. Warmer weather stand-bys, such as whiting, black margate, Atlantic croaker and snook, will be the mainstays through summer, although most of the snook will be under-sized and must be released. Right now it's best to fish when the weather will allow it and to take advantage of the variety of species in the surf zone.
