December Haulover Fishing Report

As the rest of the country freezes we here in Miami are enjoying some great weather and some great fishing. Some of the recent gale-force winds have receded enough to allow us to get out on the water. The hard Northeast and East winds have made sail fishing and mahi-mahi one of the main stories around. We have caught sailfish on every one of our trips except one and even then we still had a shot at 2 of them but failed to connect. Currently we are averaging between 1-5 sailfish per trip. While waiting for the sailfish to bite we have had other visitors such as mahi-mahi. One thing to remember this time of year is to avoid the temptation to overrun the fish. What I mean by this is that this time of year it's not a bad idea to spend some time in the 40-80 range. You may be surprised to find mackerel, kingfish, and sailfish in 40' of water. On my past trips we have caught several mahi-mahis in 80' of water. So don't be in a rush to run 12-15 miles offshore to find fish. In addition to the sails and mahi-mahi we have also been catching our fair share of bottom fish. The mutton snapper bite has been very good. The muttons have been averaging from 5-13 pounds. We have also been catching some grouper in addition to the muttons. There have been some blackfin tuna around also. We have caught them anchored up and live chumming with pilchards. The tunas are a blast on light tackle. I have also mentioned kingfish in several of my reports and kingfish should only get better here on in. I have not done a tarpon trip yet so as soon as I do I will let you know what we caught. Well that is it for now. If you wanted to get a trip in during the holidays give me a call. I only have a couple of days left in December but I do have some openings for the month of January so if you are coming down for a bowl game give me a call and we can set something . I will try to keep doing these quick updates as much as possible to keep you up to date on the action. Until next time… Best of Luck.
