It’s summer! That means dolphin one day, but not the next. The dolphin fishing is fair at best, but this can change in hours. The inlet fishing was good all week. We had tarpon to over 100 pounds nearly every day. They were eating crabs south of the inlet and pilchards or herring along the jetties. When fishing this live bait we also had action from 8 to 15 pound jacks, barracuda and some snook. You will want to use circle hooks for this fishing as snook season is closed for the summer and the rest of your catch aren’t very popular food fish. We had a good trip to the Bahamas this week. We ran over on Friday and my guest did a little sight seeing before we checked into our hotel and went fishing. We ran south to some wrecks up on the bank where the fish were varied and hungry. We had sharks to 80 pounds. They were blacktip, reef and nurse. We had barracuda to 30 pounds, king mackerel to 35 pounds, cero mackerel to 7 lb., gray snapper to 5lb, yellowtail, blue runners to 6lb, bunches of black and nassau groupers, houndfish, remora and cobia. That was 14 kinds of fish in about 5 hours. I knew we were in the Bahamas when my anglers said they could no longer hold a fishing rod, even without a fish. We returned to the hotel with the setting sun and had some of our fish fried and sautéed along with some cracked conch for a super supper. Saturday it was the hunt for big grouper and snapper. We caught a 10 pound red grouper in the first ten minutes and then all that struck were strawberry groupers and triggers. We changed targets to yellowtails to take back home for a fish fry. We ran 15 miles south, and anchored in 80 feet of water over some coral heads. With frozen chum in the chum bag and oats chum ladled over the side we had solid yellowtails behind the boat in a few minutes. We caught a dozen before the predators moved in. 4 sharks latter we decided we had plenty of fish for some great dinners and headed back to Miami Beach. On Bouncer’s Dusky 33 that was a comfortable 2 hour run. Be sure you get a bean bag chair for napping during those long runs.
