Keep ‘em coming. Sailfish that is. Sailfish are still pouring into our area, giving live bait fisherman unbelievable action. Double digit catches have been commonplace. Captain Quinton Dieterle on the “Cutting Edge” caught and released an unbelievable 17 out of 22 fish last week. Along with the “snooter” bite has been on again, off again Dolphin action. The Dolphin have been hitting the same live baits fished for the Sails. As long as we have warmer weather, the Dolphin action should continue. A few larger Dolphin are beginning to show up at the docks. We should see an increase in size and amounts of Dolphin as we get closer to springtime. Other action this week included a few Kingfish, with the fish being a little on the small size, under 24 inches, or on the larger size hitting 25 pounds. Rumors are flying around that there is a good Swordfish bite offhore in about 1000 feet of water. Anglers are fishing at night with Squid and live baits. Amberjack are increasing in numbers over the wrecks in the Miami area. Their numbers will increase as we get nearer to the month of March. And Wahoo are starting to make a move in and around the Gulf Stream. They should be having a good run of them in the Keys especially around Mollasses Reef light. The large amount of Sailfish in town will make anglers fishing the Capt Bob Lewis Boat Center-Yamaha Billfish Challenge Tournament happy this week. The staging area is at the Miami Beach Marina. The fishing starts on Saturday February 24 and finishes on Sunday February 25th. The weigh-in will begin on Saturday at 5:00pm and on Sunday at 4:00pm. Everyone is invited to come down and watch this exciting event. Two additional Sailfish tournaments are just around the corner: The Yamaha Miami Billfish Tournament April 5-8, and The Cocoplum Yacht Club Tournament April 19-22.
