Miami, Florida - Offshore

This past week we had calm winds which didn’t help fishing any. Lots of kingfish are starting to show up from Ocean Reef in north Key Largo to Haulover Cut. Anglers are catching them using live baits slowtrolled on the downrigger and trolling deep rigs along the reef. We caught a few also trolling with live threadfin herring on the surface. A few dolphin would come through here and there, but you had to be quick to catch them because they were moving fast. On Friday my party on the “Magic Fingers” caught our limit of Kingfish, a nice Cero mackerel, one Mutton Snapper and about 8 Dolphin. The next day (Saturday) fishing was slow. The water was very dirty and there was no current. We headed south from Miami and ended up off Ocean Reef in Key Largo and found a slight north current, and clean water. A few Sailfish were caught and an occasional Dolphin would be caught, as well as a kingfish. Anglers that were anchored and fishing along the edge of the reef caught yellowtail and cero mackerel. Look for Sailfishing to get continually better. The kingfishing should continue as well as dolphin moving along the reef in search of a meal. Some cooler weather wouldn’t hurt along with some higher winds. November and December bottom fishing should be good.
