Surprisingly, anglers are still enjoying decent dolphin catches despite the heavy storms and hot weather. I spoke with one angler fishing this week and he told me of a school of dolphin he found in 1000 feet of water that were all 15 to 20 pounds. He caught plenty of them and said there was at least a forty pound fish deep below them that they couldn’t get to strike. Other anglers have been finding hit and miss dolphin action but everyone has still been able to find a few. Along the edge, captains fishing off Key Biscayne report plenty of bonito and a few sailfish. Baitfishing has been fairly easy. I found a huge school of pilchards last week in Hawks Channel and pounded them with the cast net. It was reported that they have been there for a while. They have been off Cape Florida. We had a full moon last week but I have heard no reports from the Cubera fisherman. It was a perfect moon and there should have been a few caught. Look for them again on the moon in September. It’s been hot and very few anglers have been fishing. Lots of divers and good reports of lobster. Snook fisherman are anxiously waiting the opening day September 1st.
