Anglers have been enjoying the peak of the sailfishing season this week. Sailfish have been just about everywhere and this action should continue into April. While fishing live baits with kites, anglers are finding the fish from 80 to approximately 160 feet of water. The bite has been good in the morning, but that can change on a daily basis. If it weren’t for the sailfish, fishing in general has been slow. There has been very few dolphin and kingfish around. Last week a few captains saw a good run of dolphin offshore but they were here today and gone the next. As we get nearer to springtime we will begin to see more dolphin showing up and not for just a day. There will be sustained runs of fish. Blackfin tuna will start to explode underneath those kite baits and they will probably be in the twenty to thirty pound class. Every year at this time blackfins make a showing off of our coast. They are not in big schools but are individual fish. Most anglers will catch them while kite fishing. The bottom bite has been good further south. When we have targeted grouper and snapper we have been successful catching a few of each every trip.
