Miami - Haulover to Triumph Reef

Summertime Pattern Well the summertime pattern is in full effect. We have been catching a mixed bag of fish in on the reef. The kingfish have been very good this year so far with fish ranging into the high 20#’s. As is usual for this time of year these fish are deep some days they are 150-180’ deep on the bottom. If you are putting down your bottom rod and getting cut off you may want to put on a piece of wire on it and you may be surprised. The bonitos are also here in good numbers. Many days you will not be able to put out your second rod before you already have a bonito on. These hard charging fish are great on light tackle and put up a spirited fight. It is also not uncommon for all you rods to go off at once when the bonitos are in the area. One fish that I often get asked about is mahi-mahi. The mahi-mahi fishing this year has been either hit or miss. You may have to run 20 miles offshore to find them only to get there and find a barren ocean. Then again you may be in 180’ of water 3 miles off the beach and run into a school of fish. Again inconsistency has been the theme here. Many fisherman are forgoing looking for mahi-mahi and staying in on the reef. Maybe that is why the king fishing has been so good because there are more people staying in on the reef instead of running offshore looking for mahi-mahi. The sword fishing has been a little slow for everyone. We had one trip where we never had a bait get eaten. After talking to several sword fishermen the one consistent theme was that fishing was slow. But stay tuned because we are heading into the best time of the year for swords. We have caught sailfish when we have some nice north current. We have had several day of 3 knot current in on the reef. It almost reminds me of winter fishing minus the 95 degree weather. That north current is leading some boats to catch up to 5 sails in a day. So there you have it. The summertime pattern is in full effect and it’s a lot of fun as long as you keep your options open.
