You Have To Work

That would be the appropriate title for this report. That is the mindset that you have to have right now to catch fish. A lack of current and wind have made for some tuff days of fishing. We have caught fish on all of our trips but I have had to become creative to trick some of these fish into biting. The lack of north current and wind made for a slow sailfish report. We had a couple of trips where the sailfish were a no shows. That can be attributed to 3 things. One is the 80+ degree weather we are having in the middle of January. While much of the country is wearing overcoats and scarves we are in shorts and flip flops. Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining about the temperature but it's not forcing the sailfish to the north of us to migrate as far south as we like. That being said they are forecasting 2 cold fronts to pass thru Miami this week. That should charge up the sail fishing in the next couple of days. The other two things that have affected the sailfish has been the lack of wind, which will change with the next 2 cold fronts and the lack of current which can show up at any time. And although we have caught some sails I hope it becomes a little more consistent. Let's talk about the fish that have we have been catching on a consistent basis. It has been an assorted cast of characters ranging from sharks to mackerel, red groupers to kingfish. Many people want to catch sailfish but at the end of the day my job as a charter boat captain is to bend the fishing rods and these fish are what helps me do that. Please keep in mind we may not have the perfect conditions for sailfish but we may have the right conditions for kingfish and that is what is going to bite the majority of the day. Unfortunately there is no way to predict exactly what the conditions will be until you get out there and see for yourself. Now let's talk about what has been biting on a consistent level, TARPON. These fish continue to bite well and if you saw my last report I spoke about the size of these fish and that also continues to impress. We caught one fish in the 40-50 pound class but we did manage several large fish in the 90-110 class. You don't need to run offshore to catch some of the largest and toughest fish we have in Miami, They are right here in 15' of water. Well that is for now but please remember that the Miami International Boat show is coming in February.
