Mosquito Lagoon & North Indian River Lagoon

Summer has finally arrived on the Mosquito Lagoon. The past few days we have enjoyed our typical summer pattern of calm mornings instead of the high winds we have been experiencing for the past few weeks. As the winds died down, the redfish tails came up. This week brought several redfish over twenty pounds along with a few trout over seven pounds on both fly and spin tackle. When the surface is calm look for backing or tailing redfish on the shallow grass flats. The fish are actively searching for crabs and shrimp and occasionally attacking the mullet schools. The big trout have been holding near the shore in the shallow sand spots. A topwater fly or a DOA Chug Head on a 5" tail have been taking some trophy sized trout. Reds are eating EP flies and 4 and 5: DOA Cal tails in green or gold. A few tarpon are making their way into the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon. As the water temp continues to increase, we will see more silver kings arriving. I like to throw a DOA TerrorEyz or Baitbuster to these fish. A leader of at least 40 pounds will help prevent them from breaking you off. Use circle hooks for live bait to facilitate catch and release of these great game fish.
