Mosquito Lagoon Report

After a spat of bad weather that caused the cancellation of quite a few fly fishing trips, the weather has improved dramatically. The water temperature has dropped into the mid 60's to near 70 and most flats are crystal clear. Baitfish have been plentiful but not everywhere that there is bait are the gamefish. The redfish, black drum, and big seatrout are on the flats but they have been very concentrated. On some days, you can cover a lot of water and not see to much and, suddenly, there are hundreds of fish around. The 1/4 oz DOA shrimp, The shallow running Baitbuster, a 5.5" CAL bait with a Woodies Rattle, and a 3" CAL on a jighead have been working the best for spin anglers. If you are fly fishing, try the black redfish worm for drum and redfish, and a bendback fly for the trout. All three species can be found in sandy spots on the grass flats. Redfish can be just in the grass as in the sand. Polarized glasses, and a stealthy approach will be necessary if you want to sight fish. Winter can be some of the best sight fishing of the year.
