Fishing was off the charts the past few days with Carl Benovitz and son catching ten reds and ten trout for a fun morning. We had some fish tailing early but that didn‘t last as long as I would have liked. They tossed baits in front of reds with most of them getting refused. They had a few double headers in that twenty fish morning. The next day I had David Braken out for a Saturday morning of fishing. I was a little concerned about the front that I was watching to the northwest. Concerned about the low pressure hitting us before we could get to the fish that morning. When I got to the flat my concerns were gone as I settled my Day-5 outside two very large red fish schools. The tails popped up and we watched them flag us down for the next ten minutes as we made our way into casting distance. It was not uncommon to see ten or so tails waving at once as they rutted up the bottom. David made a good cast and it was fish on, the school moved a few feet and started to tail again. We did this for several hours and then we went to catch some black drum. David caught ten reds and about eight drum, he took one of each for the dinner table. We fished the fish slow so they didn’t scatter all over the flat. The reds have been feeding like mad before the fronts, and the drop in the water has allowed us to see the flags waving. But for the next two days we will be blown out with winds out of the NE at 20 kts. plus. I took my brother fishing last week and he cleaned a red that had over a hundred mud minnows in its belly. If we did not catch him he would have eaten himself to death. We have been taking most of our trout on 12 Fathom slam’Rs in chartreuse. We have taken a lot but not most of our reds on the same plastics. Remember trout are out of season so release them nicely. I use a hook remover so I never touch the fish. It is also a good idea if you bend the barbs down. You may catch a few flounder along the ICW sandy shores. I like tossing plastics to the shore and dragging them off the edge. Use Stren super braid so you will feel your bite even if the fish is coming at you. Be safe out there.
