By George Welcome
Date Fished: 5/31/2000 Water Temperature: 89 Water Clarity: 1 foot Today topped off what has been the most dynamic month I can remember on the Marsh. Final count for the month is 2552 bass which was closed out from 4:30 until 8:30 today. Starting out on the boat trails with winds our of the ENE at about 10-15 we put several in the boat using chug bugs and Carolina rigged lizards. Getting sick of fighting the wind we went looking for some protection and in the process found stacked up bass. 79 bass were caught in the four hours with one heart wrenching 14+ left in the water before we could get a picture. Most were caught with chug bugs with a fair share falling to both fat shads and Carolina rigged lizards in watermelon and pumpkinseed. There were only 4 boats out there with only three back on the Farm. Jim Porter was working the E/W canal and placing bass in the boat by fishing the adjacent levees. Looked like he might have been working a buzz bait but couldn't quite make it out. It's official: The following e-mail was received about the Stick Marsh/Farm 13 paving projects: Hello and thanks for your interest in the St. Johns River Water Management District The paving you have mentioned will be taking place from June 12 - June 17. Launching of boats will be impacted during this time. We will have a sign at Babcock Street to keep folks from driving all the way down. Also, there should be a notice in the local paper announcing the closure. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Garrett Wallace Office of Communications SJRWMD The parking lot and some of the road is going to be paved and as you can see by Garrett e-mail, access is going to be closed from 12 June to 17 June. Make your plans accordingly. I cannot stress enough the low water conditions. Be careful in there!
