The offshore fishing for sailfish and dolphin has been hit and miss the past couple of weeks. The fish have been widespread and you just have to get lucky to come across them. The king mackerel bite has also been a bit slow but we are getting good reports from areas south of us and we look for the situation to improve as the water temperatures continue to rise. The Spanish mackerel bite was on for two of our trips last week, but were hard to come by on our last trip out. It is funny how you can load up on them one day and not find them the next. We did get to see a couple of cobia the other day while fishing for pompano in ten feet of water, but by the time we threw a lure toward them they were gone. The pompano bite was on for a couple of days off the beach between the inlet and Bath Tub Beach. Blue fish and big jacks are also being caught near the surf. Moving inside the inlet, pompano are being taken at the Stuart Causeway and the Sailfish flats. Some are also being caught at the bar near the Roosevelt Bridge. We also caught croaker at the Evans Crary Bridge using shrimp tipped jigs. There are plenty of mullet in the north fork of the St. Lucie River and at night you can hear them being pounded by snook and big jacks. April 1st is the first day since November that we will be able to keep vermillion snapper and we are looking forward to catching some. More later.
