13” VS 14” Well the conversation of conservation is hot and heavy on the coast. A new law will very soon be passed making 13” Speckle Trout Legal. Conservationists and Biologists VS Commercial Interests. Politics won and those of us who see ourselves as stewards of the sea lost. My clients will now have a choice to keep smaller fish! An inch does not sound like a lot but a 14 inch fish is just beginning to get “shoulders” and starting to put on enough heft to make a nice filet. I will never make a paying customer throw back a “Legal” fish, but I would have been happier if the size minimum went up to 15” or 16” with an upper size limit not to be exceeded to conserve the spawning population. Enough of the soap Box! The Specks are down DEEP! With lows around 24 and water temps around 46 it has been necessary to fish/troll in 20-30 feet of water to pull this sluggish biting quarry off the bottom. Don’t get me wrong they are there and they are stacked up. You either have to slow troll through them repeatedly, or hover over them and jig right on their noses. But the good news is that they are getting a little use to the colder weather now and are moving into the shallower canals when the water temps hit about 52. On those sunny days focus around the mouths of the canals that have deep water access and work your way into them. You will be pleasantly rewarded with a bent rod and tight line!
