Hot Trout bite

Beaufort

The sea trout bite has really started to turn on big time in the St. Helena and Port Royal Sound area. Reports of good numbers are coming in everyday, and the fish seem to be sizing up nicely to exceed our 14 inch minimum. This looks like it will be our best trout season in several years. Caught 43 on a morning trip yesterday. They have rebounded nicely from the two winter kill seasons we experienced. These fish are being taken in shallow moving water around shells or on grass edges, and also in the middle of deeper creeks. Lots of baits work this time of year. Live shrimp or mud minnows are always great. And for artificials, you can throw topwaters, like Spooks, or a variety of soft plastics and Mirrolures. DOA's under popping corks are very popular. My favorite is a Norton Sand Eel Jr on a 1/4 ounce jig head, worked slowly on the bottom. We are expecting our first really cool nights next week and the water temperature should begin to tumble. It is currently around 70 degrees and the fishing only gets better as it falls clear to the low 50's. Great weather to be on the water. Except for this Hurricane getting ready to come up the coast. Tight lines to you.
