February 25, 2008 Water temp 52 I can’t tell you just how good the crappie fishing is on Lake Oconee! You just have to come and see for yourself. Last year the crappie fishing was so-so; we caught a lot but it just never really took off like it should have. This year everything has changed. We have been catching plenty of 2-pound fish in areas that they have showed up for many years now. I have been focusing exclusively in the Apalachee River area. Just today we boated 20 fish from 8am to 2pm and they were all very heavy fish. Spider rigging is the way to put them in the boat and they seem to really like the black/blue, black/purple and Red/Chartreuse colors. Tipping them with minnows has produced a deadly combination. The best method is to slow troll over the areas that are holding fish and do not be in a big hurry. A lot of anglers make the mistake of running all over the lake when the fish stop biting. If you just wait a little while, if they are there, they will start biting again. Don’t wait for the dogwoods to start blooming. Right now is the time to catch these fish and it will not last but for a few more weeks. Give me a call if you are interested in filling a cooler. Tight Lines Doug Nelms
