May 5, 2014 Report. I am happy to report that the weather has made it easier to find the Redfish and Speckled Trout here around the Venice area. The winds have settled down some, so we can move around and try to fish different areas. When the seas settle down, it gives us a plan "B", "C", or even "D" if plan "A" does not work out. I always like it when plan "A" works perfectly, but , if you fish much, you know that it doesn't always work out. We have to "adapt and overcome". The Mississippi River stage is hovering around 8ft to 9 ft, and is muddy, so we are fishing around the outside beaches, points, and ponds that have more salt water. The river water temperature is around 63 degrees. We are using mostly soft plastics under a popping cork, and spinners to catch our fish. I have mostly been targeting the big Redfish, but have also been catching slot Redfish and Specks for the folks that want to take some fish home. We have caught Redfish up to 32 lbs. this last week, but have caught many in the mid twenty pound range. I have had clients from Texas, Alabama, Kansas, and South Carolina fishing multiple days this last couple of weeks and everyone said they had a good time. They enjoyed the fishing, although not always easy, and enjoyed the Fish On Venice Lodge and the good cooking. We don't have the nicest and biggest place around, but have had no complaints as far as the hospitality. Good thing I have good help. I expect the fishing to only get better over the next few weeks, including the offshore Tuna fishing. The offshore captains have been doing well when they can get out. When they can't get out they all started taking out there clients on inshore trips. In any case, my goal is for one of my trips to produce a fifty plus pound Redfish, and it will probably come on one of those tough days where we only catch a few fish.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Shawn Lanier
