Marlin fishing for Spring Break in Cabo

Cabo San Lucas

Overall Catch Success Rate 99% BILLFISH: We are almost half way into March and still the fishing conditions to be excellent. Usually in March we expect to hit some doldrums, when the water turns cold and the marlin lose interest, but so far this has not been the case. We have finally started to experience some semblance of winter, when boats had a hard time getting up the Pacific due to windy weather and rough seas, but when they did they found marlin, even with a full moon this week. Eighty four percent of anglers caught marlin resulting in a total catch of 186, with all but two released. Those that didn't catch marlin caught something else, closer to shore and away from bumpy seas and just one boat drew a blank. The beginning of the week turned out to be better with both "La Brisa" and " C Rod" catching ten marlin apiece on March 5th for groups from New Jersey and Minnesota, respectively. On March 6th "Yahoo" caught eight marlin for Gary and Terry Han and friends from North Dakota and "La Brisa" followed up with nine more on the 8th for Jerry and Jason Landress from Colorado Springs. The marlin have been eating on the surface and also on the bottom as they do at certain times of year. Weights are from 110 to 160 lbs. OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches were in second place after marlin with thirty five percent of charters catching between one and three fish, usually incidental catches when fishing for marlin. We saw a lot of small mako sharks again this week with "Tracy Ann" catching five makos, all but one releasd and three marlin released for Kraig Jacobs and Greg Blackman from La Grande, Oregon; a few days later this same boat caught four makos and three marlin again, for Kenneth Colleta, Ken Lickel and Rob Flynn from Laguna Beach, Ca. No tuna for us this week though there were a bunch of sierra with catches of twenty plus fish not unusual, as well as some yellowtail the odd rooster and cabrilla. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Partly cloudy, seas choppy some days. AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 70 F BEST LURES: Live Bait. Based on the catches of Pisces by Tracy Ehrenberg Striped marlin just about to be released by Matthew Rainwatter {%image_id=8388%}
