Mississippi Sound & the Pascagoula River Marsh

Pascagoula River

The flounder are here! Over the past week we have been catching good numbers of flounder using live cocahoes. All of the flounder are in the one to two pound range right now. We will see much bigger ones soon. We have also been picking up quite a few 7 to 10 pound redfish while fishing for flounder. The reds will be in the shallows from now until December, and will be cruising the bayous and lakes following schools of mullet and menhaden. When the reds are on that pattern we show them a lot of top water lures. There's nothing like watching the wake of a redfish bearing down on your top water lure. The spring rains had slowed the speckled trout action, but the water is clearing and salinity is returning. Several good catches of speckled trout have been reported this week, including a 6.5 pounder. Over the next week I will be fishing for speckled trout and redfish using top water lures from daylight until about 8 a.m., and then moving to the flounder holes after that.
