Monster Reds and Specks This fall is proving to be a great one for the big reds and specks. Every September the trophy specks start to move up river in large schools for the fall spawn. We usually start locating them around mid-September and can stay on the same pattern until mid-November. I was worried that the tidal surge from hurricane Katrina had disrupted the normal migration, but all signs we have seen indicate a very normal year. In fact, our catches so far are better than normal and the fish are right where we expect them to be this time of year. This week we have consistently caught three to six pound specks in two of our favorite spots. We are also catching redfish up to 20 pounds in several holes. Our bait of choice right now is live menhaden fishing on the bottom at various depths. Early morning and late evening you can catch the big trout on top water lures around the shallow flats along the river. As the water temperature cools toward November we will do a lot more of that. But for now the best bet is the live menhaden while they are still here. We will be fishing this pattern with great success over the next several weeks, so if you want to catch big reds and specks in large numbers now is the time.
