Bigger Flounder and A Lot of Them! May 24, 2005 Over the past several days we have caught good numbers of flounder on all of the usual points and river banks. As long as the tide is moving, the flounder are poised to ambush anything that swims by. We are still using live cocahoes for bait. Some of the flounder this week have been in the 3 to 5 pound range. Most of them are about 1.5 pounds, which is a great size to filet for frying. The redfish are in the shallows now feeding on schools of finger mullet. Entire schools of mullet jump out of the water when the reds make a run at them. We are catching the reds on live mullet, live cocahoes and artificial lures. The reds range in size between 5 and 10 pounds. This is looking to be a productive summer for fishing in the Pascagoula River marsh. Thousands of schools of baby menhaden are in all of the lakes and bayous. Speckled trout, redfish and flounder will feed on the menhaden until August or September. We will start using menhaden for bait in a few weeks after they reach 2 to 3 inches in length.
