Mild Winter Keeping Fish Shallow The mild winter temps have resulted in more of a fall fishing pattern through December and into January. The specks have been consistently holding in 4 to 6 feet depths all along the river and in the lakes. The best lures for these fish have been 1/4 oz. jigs with avocado or chartreuse cocohoe tails. We have also found good numbers of trout using top water lures on the shallow reefs on the warmer days when the temperatures are above 60 degrees. The avarage depth on those reefs is about 3 feet. Heavy rains a few weeks ago muddied the river and pushed the trout and reds further downstream than we normally fish this time of year. This week we can tell the fish are moving back up river as the water clears and salt returns. We have had some outstanding catches of redfish in a few favorite holes. We used the cocohoe jigs and Tsunami jigs with a lot of success.
