Mississippi Sound South Of Biloxi, MS On Verge Of Hot Fishing!

Last Saturday, a trip to the Mississippi Sound with John Noel, one of my regular clients let us know that the inshore bottom fishing in the Mississippi Sound is on the verge of turning on soon. A run from the Back Bay of Biloxi to the Keesler Reef located south of the west end of Deer Island, back to the east to the Katrina Reef located south of the east end of Deer Island, then to the werck west of the Horn Island Channel produced little activity. However, our last stop in the Mississippi Sound was at the Bellefontaine Reef located about a mile south off the Bellefontaine Beach. Here, a good bite of really nice southern kingfish a.k.a. "ground mullet" turned on and John boated 20 plus of the tasty fish, as well as the first nice white trout of the season. Wind suddenly picked up and we ran back into the Back Bay of Biloxiwhere the usually good bite of black drum and sheepshead had shut down. Although John did land a nice flounder to fo with 40 plus tasty ground mullet fillets. Although this was one of those days when fish seemed to have lockjaw, we would have probably loaded up on the ground mullet if we had got there earlier. Our bait was fresh dead shrimp from the Fort Bayou Bait Camp in Ocean Springs, MS fished on bottom rigs with a 1-ounce weight, 25-pound-test Seaguar Fluorocarbon leader material, and a 1/0 Gamakatsu Octopus Hook. Although it was a flow morning, a bonus catch of stingrays, hardhead catfish, and those tasty ground mullet are a sign that things are about to get really good for the inshore light tackle fishing here in South Mississippi Good fishing!
